Two for incoming hots and two for outgoing hots. Double switches sometimes called double pole allow you to separately control the power being sent to multiple places from the same switch.

How does a double light switch work. In regular single pole switches you can attach the hot wires to either screw terminal. For example the diagram below shows the inside of each switch and their onoff positions. The double throw element is provided by the two traveler wires that pass onward from the four way switch to the next switch. Most manufacturers use the abbreviations dpst and dpdt to indicate switch types. A two way light switch produces light when two of three wires transport a current to either end of the installation. The third wire creates repetitive switching at either end.
The red wire is the traveler that carries the current from one switch to another.
