If the switch that was there is a standard light switch with two brass screws on it and one green screw you can connect the red wire to either of the brass screws. However if you need to rewire a light switch or a plug socket you may occasionally come across two black wires.

Light switch 2 black wires 1 red wire. Connect the black wire to the other brass screw. The two reds together in a connector. The red was attached to the lower brass screw. There are two black wires attached to one brass screw and a red wire attached to the other brass screw. Connect the red wire coming from the outlet to the bottom switch terminal and now the lower receptacle on the split tab outlet will get power only when the switch is on. This is an older house circa 1967 and the wiring appears to be all over the place.
1 ground 1 red 2 white and 2 black. How is it connected at the moment. The switch should have 3 terminals for 2 way setup the single red wire on its own will probably goto com common and the remaining redblack to l1 l2 but carefully check this before you take the old one completely off. I pulled the receptacle that i thought was the lead and found 6 wires inside. The united states has strict codes relating to home wiring including clearly defined colors on the outer casing of the wires. T read more.
Black means hot white signifies neutral and green indicates ground. Green yellow earths together. There appear to be two white assume neutral wires screwed together with a wire nut and a ground wire tucked away inside the junction box. I have two outlets that dont work. If you have a ground wire connect the ground wire to the green screw. Connect the black jumper wire to the top terminal screw on the switch and now both the switch and the top receptacle in the split tab outlet have power.
One of the blacks is a switch wire the other is the neutral.
