The basic design of an spdt center off switch. Here is a diagram of a spdt toggle switch.

How to wire a spdt switch. A spdt toggle switch has 3 terminals. Spdt toggle switch single position dual throw xx. One common pin and two pins which vie for connection to the common. Bend the wire back securing it to the terminal. Were going to connect a single pole double throw relay to a circuit to light up a led. A spdt is a bit more sophisticated.
Now that we know what each terminal pin represents we now wire it to a circuit for it to do a real world function. And the wire is sticking straight up and thats going to make it easier to connect to. Terminal 2 is connected to power. Spdts have three terminals. So a spdt switch can power either one of 2 circuits. Ok so were just crimping that wire against that terminal that comes out of our single pole double throw switch.
Solder the wire to the terminal. I recently ran into a wiring problem and made an illustrated post on how i figured out the solution and some guesses as to why i came to the solution i did. This wire will supply the voltage or signal from the source to the switch. Terminal 1 is connected to one load or accessory terminal 3 is connected to another load or accessory. Below is the schematic diagram of the wiring for connecting a spdt toggle switch. When the relay is powered the red led shuts off and the green led lights up.
And terminal 3 can connect to any load to power any device. Spdts are great for selecting between two power sources swapping inputs or whatever it is you do with two circuits trying to go one place. When the relay isnt powered the red led is lit and stays on. Terminal 1 can connect up to any load to power a certain device. Terminal 2 is the terminal which receives the power necessary so that the loads on terminals 1 and 3 can be powered. One of the most common pieces of circuit bending hardware is the single position dual throw spdt switch.
Another common switch type is the spdt. Slide the signal wire through the terminal hole. You can use really any color wire you want as long as its copper or aluminum or something conductive. Connect the source wire to the center terminal. It makes one of two connections. Most simple slide switches are of the spdt variety.
