No specific reading using a smartcraft reading tool is showing. My boat tach started showing rpms way higher than it should and i could tell the motor wasnt actually turning that high.

So if the tach is good then the jumping or bounce is being caused from the distributor cap to the tachometer. I put my msd box and my auto meter tach and speedo in and mine kinda does the same thing. So here we are trying to diagnose the problem. Turn on the boat and check if the tachometer receives a reading of revolutions per minute from the engine wiring.
Jason marine mechanic replied 5 years ago more than likely what it is it corrosion in the wiring behind the gauge. Reconnect the boat battery to the boat wiring system. When first started the needle jumps about 2000 rpms and then goes away when it warms up a bit. Forum jump all times are gmt 4. Also at about 3000 rpm it will jump around 500 1000 rpms. Recently i have notced that my tachometer jumps around erratically.
Give the boat some throttle and confirm the tachometer reads the increase correctly. Other times when travling steady or accelerating the tach will bounce around by a couple of hundred rpm. Sometimes at idle it sits really low around 400 rpm when the engine speed apears to be normal. Anyone have this same problem or think of any poential repairs. Also that engine seem to get too much gas smoke quite bad at idle speed. Education is hanging around til youve caught on frost 06 24 2014 1145 pm.
